access road

Featured
Puzzle #14 · June 15, 2025
An access road is a smaller road that connects to a main highway or leads to a specific location like a farm, military base, or housing development. Unlike a highway entrance ramp, an access road typically runs alongside or branches off from a larger road and serves local traffic only.

In rural America, access roads are often unpaved and may be the only way to reach remote properties. In military contexts, access roads are strategically important—controlling them means controlling who gets in and out. Real estate developers build access roads before anything else, because without one, land is essentially worthless.
