Puzzle #191 · December 9, 2025
In the 1970s and 1980s in North America, acid rain was precipitation that included sulfur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide pollution from coal power plants, vehicles or industry. It became a major environmental concern with widespread impacts on lakes and forests, especially in the Northeast U.S. and Eastern Canada.
In 1990, the Clean Air Act Amendments, created a cap and trade program which was effective at reducing acid rain in North America, though the problem of acidic soils in some parts of the Northeast persists and recovery is slow.
Acid rain continues to be a problem in some parts of Asia.
