anechoic chamber

Featured
Puzzle #236 · January 23, 2026
An anechoic chamber is a specialized room designed to completely absorb sound. Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the inventors was Harvey Sleeper (along with Leo Beranek).

An anechoic chamber absorbs both sound and electromagnetic waves, creating an echo-free environment to test audio equipment, study sound perception, or evaluate electronic devices without interference. Its history dates back to the 1940s with the first wedge-based acoustic chamber at Bell Labs.

The chambers created conditions for accurate acoustic measurements, leading to standardized designs for sound and radio frequency testing.
