U.S. antitrust law dates to the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, passed to break up the industrial monopolies of the Gilded Age.
The most famous antitrust case was the 1911 breakup of Standard Oil into 34 smaller companies. AT&T was broken up in 1984. Microsoft survived its 2001 antitrust trial but was forced to change practices. More recently, Google, Apple, Amazon, and Meta have all faced major antitrust actions, reigniting debate about whether Big Tech has become the new Standard Oil.
