bellwether

Fossil Word
Puzzle #288 · March 16, 2026
Bellwether refers to a leader, indicator, or trendsetter. But the term comes from a castrated male sheep.

In Middle English, a wether (or wedder) was a castrated male sheep. A “bell-wether” was a bell-wearing wether who acted as the leader of the flock, which the others followed.

The word “wether” is considered a fossil word (technically a “bound morpheme”) because it is no longer used outside this one expression. The only wether we have today is a bellwether.
