chain mail

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

Chain mail is armor made of interlocking metal rings riveted or interlinked together, used extensively in medieval warfare from approximately the 5th to 15th centuries across European, Middle Eastern, and North African military traditions. Chain mail provided crucial flexibility and protection against slashing weapons from swords and axes, though it offered significantly less defense against arrows, spear thrusts, and crushing blows than later plate armor.

Creating chain mail required extraordinary labor—craftspeople had to individually make thousands of rings, then rivet or interlink each one, making garments extraordinarily expensive and valued. The construction involved varying ring sizes and materials, from iron to bronze to steel depending on availability and resources. Soldiers typically wore chain mail over padding to absorb impact shock, and medieval knights often wore chain mail under plate armor for additional protection.

The weight (typically twenty-five to thirty pounds for a complete garment) distributed across the body was surprisingly manageable for trained warriors, though uncomfortable. Chain mail remained militarily relevant even after plate armor development, with many soldiers wearing combination armor incorporating chain mail elements.
