drop in

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

To drop in means to visit someone unexpectedly or without a formal invitation. You drop by a friend's house on the way home, or you drop into a coffee shop for a quick visit.

The phrase implies casual, impromptu action rather than planned visits. It can also mean to make a brief appearance (“I'll drop in at the party for an hour”).  The casual tone makes it different from formal visiting.
