fall line

Featured
Puzzle #254 · February 10, 2026
In skiing and mountain biking, the “fall line” refers to the most direct, straight path downhill - the direction a ball would roll if left on the slope. The fall line is the path of greatest descent.

Though they prefer the term ‘gradient descent’, artificial intelligence researchers use the concept of the fall line, or direction in which the gradient is the steepest, to find the solution to a problem in a many-dimensional data space.

Skiers, bikers and data-heads all want to get to the bottom of the hill quickly.
