A farmhand is a laborer employed on a farm to perform agricultural work including planting, harvesting, animal care, and maintenance. Historically, farmhands represented a major occupational category before mechanization reduced rural labor demands. Most farmhands earned subsistence wages, living on-farm as part of their compensation. The work was seasonally intense—harvest time demanded long hours. Many farmhands were unskilled workers without property ownership, making them economically vulnerable.

Immigrant populations often filled farmhand positions, facing exploitation and poor conditions. Mechanized farming in developed nations has nearly eliminated traditional farmhand positions. However, developing nations and organic farms still employ human farmhands. The term evokes nostalgia for agrarian societies but also historical labor exploitation.
