foreign policy

Featured
May 3, 2025
Foreign policy is the set of strategies and decisions a government makes regarding its relationships, trade, and interactions with other countries. It covers diplomacy, military alliances, sanctions, trade agreements, and aid. A country's foreign policy reflects its national interests, values, and geopolitical position.

A strong, clear, enduring foreign principle or foundational component of a foreign policy can come to be known as a “doctrine”. The Monroe Doctrine held that the Western Hemisphere was closed to European colonization and America would view any such attempts to colonization as a hostile act.

Presidents and secretaries of state shape foreign policy through treaties, negotiations, and statements. Foreign policy can be isolationist (avoiding entanglement with other nations) or interventionist (actively involved in global affairs).
