frustration free

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

The term “frustration free” originated at Amazon as part of their efforts to reduce the complexity and hassle of opening packages. Amazon has been pushing sellers to offer a sustainable, easy-to-open, 100% recyclable shipping method that eliminates excessive, hard-to-remove materials like plastic clamshells, wire ties, and excessive filler. The goal is for customers to open a package in 2 min or less with no special tools.

Beyond mere frustration, the challenge of opening modern packaging is often an injury risk. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated approximately 6,500 emergency room visits in 2004 attributable to packaging-related incidents. These injuries frequently involve cuts or punctures from tools used to open the packages.

The frustration free concept is now applied broadly to indicate a process—such as installation, account setup—that lacks complex steps, tools, or confusing instructions.
