Puzzle #170 · November 18, 2025
A germ cell is a gamete, (a specialized cell), with half the typical number of chromosomes of a somatic cell. In mammals, the mature germ cells are called sperm and egg cells.
Male germ cells, sperm, are small and mobile. The definition of male is the sex that, when mature, produces small, typically motile gametes designed for transport and fertilization.
Mature female germ cells, ova, are much larger by comparison and non-motile and this forms the basis of the definition of female.
When germ cells of opposite sexes unite a new individual is conceived.
