horsepower

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

Horsepower is a unit measuring power or the rate at which work is performed, formally defined as 746 watts. It originated in the 18th century when inventor James Watt needed to compare steam engines‘ output to something farmers understood—the work horses could perform. One horsepower roughly equals the sustained work a strong horse can perform over hours, though horses can exceed this for brief periods. Vehicles are rated in horsepower to communicate engine output and performance capabilities; higher horsepower means faster acceleration and greater towing capacity.

Modern cars range from 100 to 1000+ horsepower, creating dramatic differences in performance. Despite being a technical measurement, ’horsepower‘ remains the standard in automotive language, resisting conversion to watts despite engineering's shift toward metric systems.
