Puzzle #105 · September 14, 2025
In western music, a song is written in a specific key, denoting which scale serves as the foundation of the song. A key change is when the music changes from one key to another.
Shifting up a half, or full, key during a song can build excitement or energy. The technique is used in Beyoncé‘s Love on Top (four key changes throughout the song), Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror (final chorus), Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You (final chorus), Lady Gaga's Perfect Illusion (final chorus) and others.
