kinetic energy

Featured
April 16, 2025
Kinetic energy is the energy that a moving object has. The faster something moves or the heavier it is, the more kinetic energy it carries. A bullet has kinetic energy, as does a speeding car or a falling rock.

The formula is ½ mass times velocity squared, which is why doubling speed quadruples the energy. Kinetic energy is constantly being converted into other forms—friction turns it to heat. As explained by Prof Dave, an object moving up a hill slows down gaining potential energy in an amount equal to the kinetic energy lost. It's one of the most fundamental concepts in physics.
