logger head

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

A loggerhead is a sea turtle with a large head and strong jaws. They live in the Atlantic ocean and are the state reptile of South Carolina. But there is another meaning that is quite different.

In the 1500's a logger was a block of wood. A loggerhead, then, was a wooden-headed or block-headed person - a dimwit.

Today, a loggerhead as a noun is only the turtle, but to be at loggerheads with another is to be in a dispute (with someone who is probably a dimwit).
