To name drop is to casually mention the name of a famous person one knows, or claims to know, usually in order to impress.
People who frequently name drop in conversation are found annoying by others. The TV show The Good Place, featured a character who was sent to hell for, amongst other things, excessive name dropping.
Webster and the OED both cite first usage of this term in about 1945.
