Silent Spring was the title of a book by Rachel Carson published in 1962 in which she documented environmental harm from widespread use of DDT. Silent Spring was pivotal in launching the environmental movement in the United States, and led to the ban of DDT in 1972. The name Silent Spring referencing a decline in bird populations (and loss of their song) due to overuse of pesticides.
