solar year

Featured
March 31, 2025
A solar year is the time it takes Earth to complete one orbit around the sun, approximately 365.25 days. Also called the astronomical year or tropical year, it's the measure by which we organize our calendar. The extra quarter day is why we have leap years every four years (mostly).

Different cultures have calculated this differently: the ancient Egyptians were remarkably accurate, getting 365.25 days. The Gregorian calendar refined this by skipping leap years in century years unless divisible by 400. Precision matters: off by even a few minutes per year, and your calendar drifts.

Other calendaring systems based on the moon utilize the concept of a lunar year.
