Puzzle #130 · October 9, 2025
After the costly French and Indian War, ending in 1763, Prime Minister George Grenville decided the American colonies should help pay for their own defense. In 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which placed a stamp tax on the colonies. The tax applied to legal documents, newspapers, magazines, playing cards, and more. Further, the tax had to be paid in British sterling. The revolt against the Stamp Act led to the phrase ‘Taxation without representation’.
