star quality
Featured
Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.
Star quality is the hard-to-define charisma that makes certain performers magnetic on stage or screen — the “X factor” of presence, looks, voice, and timing that pulls an audience's eye even in a crowd of equally trained professionals.
The term hardened into Hollywood vocabulary during the studio era of the 1920s–40s, when MGM, Warner Bros., and Paramount were trying to manufacture stars from contract players. Studio chiefs claimed they could recognize star quality on sight, though nobody could write down a definition. Director Billy Wilder offered the most repeated version: a star is someone who, when they walk into a room, you can't take your eyes off them.
The phrase has since spread well beyond film. Sportscasters, political reporters, and business writers all use “star quality” to describe athletes, candidates, and CEOs whose presence outsizes their résumé. It's a close cousin of phrases like “it factor” and “screen presence.”
