bag pipe

Featured
Puzzle #39 · July 10, 2025
Bagpipes are a wind instrument consisting of a bag (traditionally animal skin) that feeds air to multiple pipes, producing a continuous droning sound with a melody played on top. Though associated almost entirely with Scotland, bagpipes exist in cultures across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The Scottish Highland bagpipe became iconic through British military tradition. Pipers led troops into battle, and Amazing Grace played on bagpipes is now one of the most recognized sounds at military funerals and memorial services worldwide. The instrument is notoriously difficult to learn—there is no volume control, and it is always loud. Bagpipe jokes are a genre unto themselves.
