Distance running typically refers to runs of 5km (3.1 miles) or longer.

Distance running has been done since ancient times. There is evidence humans hunted by running after prey until the prey collapsed from exhaustion, and some tribes still practice this.

Distance running exploded in popularity in the 1970's boosted by Olympians like Frank Shorter and Jim Fixx who wrote the 1977 best-seller The Complete Book of Running.
