feather bed

Featured

Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.

Feather beds were mattresses stuffed with bird feathers, originating in the Middle Ages.

Up to 50 pounds of feathers would be collected, sometimes over years, to stuff into a tightly woven ‘tick’. Once assembled, a feather bed was often a prized possession handed-down in a family for multiple generations.

Feather beds were placed on top of a firmer mattress and had to be shaken out each day to maintain their shape.
