having fun

Featured
April 28, 2025
Having fun means enjoying yourself—engaging in activities that bring pleasure or amusement. But “fun” is surprisingly hard to define. What counts as fun varies wildly by person, culture, and era. Skydiving is fun for some and terrifying for others.

The phrase became an anthem in 1983 when Cyndi Lauper released Girls Just Want to Have Fun, which became a feminist pop anthem about women's right to enjoy life on their own terms.

Americans often ask “are you having fun?” as a way to check in socially. The expected answer is yes. Saying “not really” creates an awkward moment. “Fun” can also be used sarcastically—“well, that was fun” after a terrible experience.
