manufactured home
Featured
Every day one two-word expression or compound word used in American English.
A manufactured home is a dwelling built in a factory in sections and assembled on-site. But the word itself is a euphemism layered on top of other euphemisms.
In the 1920s, people called them ‘trailers.’ In the 1950s, the industry rebranded them as ‘mobile homes’ to escape the poor reputation—trailers sounded cheap, unstable, poverty-adjacent. Then in 1976, the federal government created the HUD Code for housing standards, and the official terminology shifted again to ‘manufactured home.’
Each renaming was driven by the same force: shame. People didn't want to live in a ‘trailer.’ The word suggested you were always moving, always temporary, always below middle class. ‘Mobile home’ sounded aspirational. ‘Manufactured home’ sounds professional, standardized, legitimate. The three names describe the exact same thing, but each one was a linguistic escape from the stigma of the previous name. This process of renaming to escape negative connotation is called the euphemism treadmill. Language doesn't create reality—it reveals what we're willing to admit about class. See more at wikipedia.
