typeface, font and character set.
A typeface is a design of related characters in a characters set (like an alphabet but including numbers and symbols). Arial, Helvetica and Times New Roman are typefaces in the Latin (or Roman) character set.
A typeface is an artistic design. It may specify whether letters have serifs, like little feet, at the end of lines, how angled vs rounded certain characters are, etc. A font is a specific size (e.g. 14 pt), weight (e.g. bold or thin) and style (e.g. italics) of a typeface.
The first typeface was the one Gutenberg used in the first printing press. It is known as Blackletter. Blackletter was used in many European countries through the 1870s and in Germany until 1941 when Hitler banned it.
